What to Do When Icons, Images, or Buttons Aren’t Showing Right
Sometimes parts of a website don’t look the way they should – buttons might be blank, icons might not show, or the page layout might look strange. This usually happens because some of the files that make up the page didn’t load correctly.
Here are some simple things to try first.
1. Clear Your Browser Cache
Your browser saves parts of pages so it loads them faster next time. But sometimes it keeps old versions and that can make icons or pictures not show up right. Clearing this “cache” often fixes the problem.
How to do it:
- Go into your browser settings.
- Look for something like Clear Browsing Data or Clear Cache.
- Choose to clear cached images and files.
- Close the browser completely, then open it again and reload the page.

2. Check for Security Tools Blocking Files
Sometimes, your firewall or security software might block parts of a website – especially things like icons, layout files, or styling instructions.
- This can happen at your workplace or if your computer has strict security settings.
- If your company’s IT team manages your internet, ask them if anything is blocking content from loading.

3. CDN or External Files Might Be Blocked
Many websites use a CDN (Content Delivery Network) – that’s a service that hosts files like icons and layout instructions so the website loads faster.
- If the CDN is blocked or down, the website may still load the text but not the look of it.
- Sometimes the CDN is blocked by network settings, a firewall, or security rules.
If nothing else fixes it, this is something your support team might need to check.
4. Check Your Internet Security Extensions
Browser extensions like ad blockers or privacy tools can block some page files (including icons!).
Try this:
- Temporarily turn off extensions like ad blockers.
- Reload the page and see if the icons appear.
Some browser tools may stop parts of a page from loading without telling you.
🔁 5. Reload the Page Fully
A normal refresh might not be enough. Try these refresh options:
- Hard refresh:
Windows/Linux: press Ctrl + F5
Mac: press Cmd + Shift + R
This forces your browser to fetch everything again instead of using saved files.
6. Try Another Browser or Device
If possible, open the same page on:
- A different browser (like Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari)
- Another device (phone or tablet)
If it looks right there, the issue is likely specific to your browser
